Youngsters join Arena Owl for a day of fun, sport and support of local charities

Youngsters join Arena Owl for a day of fun, sport and support of local charities

Around 1,000 young people pulled on their trainers to take part in the Arena Group Leeds Mini and Junior Run Saturday 8th July. Arena has sponsored the event for 7th year to ensure that is a free-to-enter event for children of all abilities organised by Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All.

Youngsters aged between 3 and 8 took on a 1.5K challenge, while those aged 9 to 14 tackled the 2.5K route. Enthusiastic crowds lined the street in and around the impressive Leeds DOck area to create a fantastic atmosphere as they cheered the young runners to the finish. All those who crossed the line were presented with a goody bag and medal.

The first junior boy across the finish line was Max Metcalfe, followed by Adam Fearnley in second place with Daniel Easton in third. Holly Davey triumphed in the girl’s junior run, Megan Weaver took second place followed by Florence Pell in third.

The children are encouraged to raise a small amount of money to help the work of a local good cause. Many of the young runners were taking part in aid of the event’s official partner charity, Winston’s Wish, which supports children, young people and their families after the death of a parent or sibling. It provides professional therapeutic support and practical advice to help youngsters cope with grief. Last year the charity supported 869 families through face-to-face contact and reached many more through its national helpline, website and publications.

Arena's Adrian Fitzpatrick, managing director was on site along with Arena Owl handing out flags and cheering on the young runners. He explains “We are proud to be associated with these wonderful events. They are a lot of fun and provide the youngsters with a great introduction to running with, and for, others.  All the children who ran today should be very proud of their efforts in supporting some excellent good causes.”

Lynne Preston, Events Manager at Run For All, said: “Well done to all the children who took part today and a huge thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make the event a big success.”

The Arena Group Leeds Mini and Junior Run is a key part of the Asda Foundation Leeds 10K which takes place on Sunday 9th July.

Run For All is part of Jane Tomlinson’s lasting legacy. Jane Tomlinson CBE raised £1.85m for children’s and cancer charities before her untimely death from cancer aged just 43 in 2007. She made headlines across the world by competing in a series of epic endurance challenges from the London Marathon, ironman and triathlon competitions, to a 4,200 mile cycle ride across the width of the USA – despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer.

Arena are proud to have supported Jane's legacy since 2010 in Leeds and other cities to encourage young people to take part in healthy activities and supporta cause close to their hearts where possible.
