What are the key tech trends for 2021?

It has been estimated that business technology has had a 10 year growth spurt over the last 10 months. As working from home became the essential model, digital tech has stepped up to keep business on track.

So what are the key tech trends that are set to emerge in 2021 that you should know about?

#1 Everything-as-a-Service

Software-as-a-service (SaaS) has emerged as critical to keeping many small and medium businesses running.

Zoom has stood out as an example of easy-to-scale, cloud-based platforms that we have come to rely upon to keep the lights on in our businesses.

Similarly, experts predict the everything-as-a-service revolution will take off in 2021, with provision from Google, Microsoft and Amazon enabling an explosion of everyday services available via on demand platforms based in the cloud.

So even small firms and new start ups can benefit from leading  tech that could give them an edge in established markets with little investment required. This then opens the door to the possibilities of artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and other exciting smart tech.

#2 Moving from the Cloud towards the Edge

Significant breakthroughs in cloud-to-edge integration in 2020 are paving the way for a shift towards the Edge computing. For companies looking to level-up their operations, it reduces the distance data needs to travel to boost the performance, speed and reliability of applications and services.

This is an exciting step forward for consumers of cloud who are looking for more reliable connectivity.

#3 5G connectivity

5G is expected to change the way people live and work as the next generation wireless network.

As well as faster connectivity, 5G reduces latency to near zero whilst delivering more bandwidth. Businesses can also manage more connected devices at any one time.

Cloud platforms will become easier and faster to use. Automation becomes more feasible and reliable. Augmented and virtual reality services can become more mainstream. So overall, 5G could be a real game changer for business, regardless of size.

#4 Increased privacy

Whilst more organisations have relied on remote working models, privacy and security remains high on the agenda.

Safeguarding data and enhances privacy is expected to take off in the tech world with businesses looking to access a trusted environment with encryption of sensitive data, analysis and processing which enables collaboration.

#5 Hyperautomation

Hyperautomation is the use of advanced technologies, such as AI, machine learning, and robotic process automation, to streamline tasks usually performed by employeesm freing up valuable resource for the more important stuff.

It can increase productivity, reduce cost and boost revenue as well as enabling operations to be scalable and flexible - a potential must have in these challenging times.

So to avoid being left behind, anything that can be automated should be! This could be anything from digitising workflows with mstore, to install a handy app from the Xerox apps store onto your MFD.

#6 Democratisation

The right tools and technology for all in the workplace is made more possible with cloud technology. Affordable, on-demand access to the tech they need to compete in sectors with existing dominant players, can also help adapt more easily to growth.

Innovation is more accessible with inefficient processes that have previously held businesses back consigned to history.

#7 The Internet of Behaviour

The IoB brings together data analytics, technology, data analytics and behavioural science to use data from physical and digital worlds to affect behaviours and activity.

Gartner identify how telematics can monitor behaviours of the drivers of commercial vehicles for example, and how that data can be used to drive improve driver performance, safety, and routing.

The potential is there for businesses to gain a deeper, more individualised understanding of customers to take marketing to the next level.

#8 Anywhere operations

The Covid 19 crisis has shone a light on the need for businesses to adopt 'Anywhere' operations. It isn't just about working from home or virtual communication. Anywhere operations provides a new model for IT to enable business to take place smoothly, regardless of location.

#9 Zero Trust Security

As the number of employees working from home has surged, flaws in existing security set-ups have been exposed particularly in relation to securing the perimeter of a network.

In order to thrive into the future, businesses are advised to adopt a new ‘Zero Trust’ approach to security more suited to a cloud-based environment.

The basic principle: 'never trust, always verify' underpins Zero Trust security delivering enhanced protection of sensitive data and resources in a remote working environment. This is made possible through continuous verification of identity and devices, rather than a perimeter-based password login security system for application and data access.
