Sunshine & Smiles feature at latest Arena Group mini & junior runs

The Leeds 10k weekend went off to a flying start with young people from across the city coming together at the John Charles' athletics track for the Arena Group mini and junior runs. The heat didn't seem to put off the young runners, supporting family and friends, or Arena Owl the event's ever popular mascot enjoying the buzz.

The young runs aged between 3 to 8 tackled a 1.5km course whilst those over 8 took on the more challenging 2.5km course starting and finishing on the athletics track in the shadow of the stadium which added to the sense of occasion.

Whilst everyone took home a medal, prizes were handed out to the top 3 girls and boys in the Junior run. Greenhill Primary School won a Fujitsu scanner donated by Arena's technical partner in the friendly school competition for having the highest percentage of children taking part relative to their school size.

Many runners took part to raise money for a charity close to their hearts with a welcome return of children and families from Sunshine and Smiles, a Leeds based Down's Syndrome charity. Many runners also chose to support this year's official charity, Elliot’s Footprint, who help families through child bereavement by offering help and guidance whilst campaigning and fundraising for improved bereavement services.

Arena Group has been supporting events across the region fror over 8 years to enusre young people can take part who might not otherwise enjoy health activity. Further runs follow in Sheffield, York and Bury later in the summer with Lincoln taking place earlier in the year.

The Arena Series is organised by Run For All, part of Jane Tomlinson’s lasting legacy. Jane Tomlinson CBE raised £1.85m for children’s and cancer charities before her untimely death from cancer aged just 43 in 2007. She made headlines across the world by competing in a series of epic endurance challenges from the London Marathon, ironman and triathlon competitions, to a 4,200 mile cycle ride across the width of the USA – despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer.

Her family continue to raise funds in her name, and through the Jane Tomlinson Appeal and Run For All, a massive £10m has now been raised for charities.
