How to Recycle a Filing Cabinet

How to Recycle a Filing Cabinet

As electronic document management (EDM) becomes increasingly sophisticated, more and more organisations are choosing to migrate their systems from the physical to the virtual world. With the time-saving and space-saving advantages of going paperless, filing cabinets are fast becoming redundant.

But in an age where we’re constantly looking for ways to reduce our impact on the environment, you may be reluctant to simply send your old storage to landfill. To help you give your filing cabinet a new lease of life, here are a few fun ideas on how to recycle it.

Get Green-Fingered

Green spaces don’t just benefit the environment, they can also have a huge impact on the happiness and wellbeing of staff, customers, and visitors. So if your premises have an outdoor area, why not use your old filing cabinet to create containers for planting?

Simply take out the drawers and lay it flat, then fill with tomato plants, sunflowers, or perennial flowers to instantly brighten up your site. This idea is perfect for schools and colleges, where pupils can get involved in the upkeep of your greenery as an extra-curricular activity.

Repurposed Storage

Depending on the size and shape of your filing cabinet, you may find another use for it around the office as a piece of furniture. Perhaps it could create a quirky coffee table, or be used to store other items such as books and stationery? Think beyond the realms of files and papers and you’d be amazed at how many uses you can find for a filing cabinet.

Creative Furniture

If you’re feeling creative and have the tools to safely recycle a filing cabinet, you could push the boundaries of possibility even further. Larger cabinets could be broken down into smaller boxes or units, whilst spray paint can be used to freshen up their appearance, to create a more colourful addition to your office or school.

For a fun end of term activity that will really engage the students, why not set an upcycling challenge to foster the creativity of your pupils?

Sell or Donate

Just because your organisation is one step ahead in the digital evolution, doesn’t mean that no one else will want your filing cabinet. If you can’t find a new use for your storage unit, why not sell or donate it to your local charity shop? To save you time and effort of transportation, you could also advertise the item as ‘free to collect’ online.

These are just a few ways in which upcycling and recycling can save your old office furniture from the landfill. Is your organisation yet to go paperless? Invest in an enterprise-grade EDM service to save time and reduce clutter in your workplace – and finally get rid of your filing cabinets!
