Green fingered Arena Group volunteers support New Lodge Allotments

Green fingered Arena Group volunteers support New Lodge Allotments

Arena Group has recently teamed-up with Yorkshire Housing to provide some much needed support to its community allotments in the New Lodge area of Barnsley. A group of volunteers from Arena will clear one plot to win over potential tenants, who will use the site to grow their own produce.

Lucy Cheetham, Community Development Advisor from Yorkshire Housing, tells us; “support from Arena will help us to get the allotments into a manageable state to pass on to tenants who will use them to grow their own produce. The allotments are currently very overgrown with weeds, so without support from Arena we would have a real mountain to climb just to get the project off the ground.”

Martin Wright, Head of HR at Arena, adds; “we encourage our employees to take two annual days out of their usual jobs to support local community and charity projects.” Arena has grown over the past 21 years and now employs around 160 people across six UK sites. Martin adds; “Supporting our local communities has always been important to us, especially as our business expands. Our volunteers get involved with all sorts of activities from painting and gardening, to hosting interview practice at school careers days or helping out at events for vulnerable groups such as the elderly. This project was a perfect fit for us, and has proven very popular with our volunteers.”

The allotments were developed in response to calls from the local community to utilise an area of derelict land; Yorkshire Housing has created 24 plots to be managed by a specially appointed Allotment Society. Lucy explains; “tenants will pay the Allotment Society an annual fee of £52 to cover the cost of water, seeds and other necessities. We are encouraging people to work together to create their own sustainable community project.” The scheme is the first step towards a larger vision that could see social enterprises formed by young people learning skills on the allotments that they can offer out to the wider community.

Sales Administrator, Leah Whitelock, took part in the day and told us; “it’s great to get out in the fresh air and help out with a project like this. It’s a change from my usual job and it’s really satisfying to know that I’m giving something back to the community.”
