Caring kids get set to tackle Arena Group York Mini and Junior Run

Hundreds of big-hearted youngsters will hit the streets of York in August to take on a free fun run challenge in aid of charity.

They will be taking part in the annual Arena Group York Mini and Junior Run, which is organised by Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All for children of all abilities.

Arena is proud to be sponsoring the Mini and Junior Run for the fifth year, once again funding entry fees for every participant. The event has become a popular fixture in the sporting calendar for thousands of children and families and is a great family day out in support of a very worthy cause. The mini and junior run is one of the biggest races of its kind in the region and entry is free for all.

This year’s run will be held at 11.45am on Sunday August 3rd. There are two distances – 2.5km for youngsters aged 9-14 and 1.5km for children aged 3-8 – with both routes finishing on Knavesmire Road near the racecourse. Mini run participants must be accompanied around the route by an adult.

Children taking part are encouraged to raise a small amount of money for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal or another charity of their choice. This year the appeal is supporting York Carers Centre’s Young Carers’ Service, which supports children aged between 8 and 18 who help care for a parent or sibling with either a physical or mental illness.

The service also provides excursions, often the only break the children get from the daily pressures of being a young carer.

Senior young carer worker Liz Langwade said: “While we get some core funding, all our activities are paid for by fundraising and donations. To have been chosen to benefit from the Mini and Junior Run is brilliant and will make such a difference to the lives of young carers in York.”

Mini and Junior Run event lead Keith Taylor said: “Both runs attract youngsters of all abilities and all those who take part should be very proud that local good causes benefit thanks to their efforts.”
