Arena Group makes tracks at Herd Farm

Arena Group makes tracks at Herd Farm

Arena has been back to Herd Farm. This time the volunteers took on work from flower arranging to laying a bike track.

Educational resource centre, Herd Farm, offers activities for young people including those at risk and with disabilities. The council run centre relies on help from volunteers to carry out some of the maintenance work.

Arena frequently visit the centre to help out and, in our first visit of the year, the volunteers were kept busy as usual.

To say the weather could have been better is an understatement. Right from the start it was pouring with rain so initially, the Herd Farm staff found tasks to do indoors.

The day began with some good old fashioned housework. Schools stay overnight on visits and then the centre staff have a very short time frame to get the facilities ship shape, ready for the next school’s arrival.

Usually a daunting task for just one man, with all of the Arena volunteers hard at work, the buildings were sparkling in next to no time.  The team, brushed, vacuumed, and mopped them into submission with only one tea break required!

Our volunteers are a hardy bunch so the next step was outside to face the elements. Some prepared and planted hanging baskets whilst the others started on the bike path.

The baskets were soon finished. They were prepared, filled with soil and then the flowers carefully arranged. Now the team were all united, working on the bike track.

The track involved filling wheelbarrows and trundling down a windy path before pouring it on the roughly dug out track. Then it was spread and finally compressed using a buffer plate. The path was a challenge but nothing compared to the steep, muddy slope as Debs found out to the amusement of everyone else!

All in all, a lot of hard but fulfilling work, and also a lot of fun – there were certainly a few aches around the Arena offices the next day!
